Walter Brooks has a following, and for those of us who joined the ranks with To and Again or Freddy the Detective, each successive Brooks' book is welcomed with joy. They have been uneven -- this is one of the good ones, with many of the old familiar animal characters, and an original story of a mechanical boy.
