THE CLIMATE IS HOPE

These various testimonials-- of patients who have (mostly) licked cancer, and the doctors who have enabled them to do so, have been taken down by Ross and affiliated so that the general effect created is hopeful, even if the statistics throughout will corroborate that they are pretty lucky people. Arthur Godfrey says ""nothing to weep over"" and his surgeon, at Roosevelt, describes the ""extended effort"" now being made through surgery, one drug, and cobalt; the Cincinnati Reds' Freddy Hutchinson has since died, but TV's Virginia Graham is still very much alive; the Strang Clinic's internist Dr. Day indicates the importance of prevention and early diagnosis; two doctors discuss research and drugs, bona fide and otherwise; another cancer in children. In toto, this is more realistic than euphoric and some of the survivors' stories are just plain cold courage. The directives are unmistakable: stop smoking and have a check-up.
