You may remember Dr. Pomeroy as co-author of the Kinsey Report and this is similarly candid and specific-it is the facts of life. Masturbation is a natural part of growing up (for some girls too-with techniques); attitudes toward homosexuality are culturally conditioned, homosexuality itself is a sometimes thing, and heterosexuality can be induced; petting to the point of orgasm without intercourse can be beneficial (for girls too) if neither wants to risk the consequences of coitus. These Dr. Pomeroy lists as guilt (stemming from moral or religious strictures), pregnancy, venereal disease or discovery; he discusses contraceptives in terms of practicality for teen-agers, urges reporting gonorrhea or syphilis to the doctor even if he has to report it to the board of health and stresses the boy's responsibility for ensuring privacy. The concluding section answers a string of underground questions (variations in sexual performance, significance of size of penis) and clarifies underground language. Whether addressing parents or the boys they're uninformed about, this aims to adjust an ""average, healthy interest in sex"" to the conditions of society; it's one book boys will read and respect.
