GIMME A BREAK!

BOOM! Swish! Come on, man, gimme a break! Streetwise sportscaster Wolf comes across on paper just as he does on local TV in New York--in this unpretentious, likable grab-bag of recollections, anecdotes, and opinions. He recalls growing up in Washington, D.C., devoted to radio, Griffith Stadium, and his ex-vaudervillian father. (""If you haven't followed sports and read about it since you were 8 years old, there is no way in the world you can catch up"" as a sportscaster.) He remembers his start at the bottom--in radio in Pikeville, Ky., doing ""news, weather, sports, music, and obituary shows."" He traces his later career: from ten years at Washington's WTOP radio to television there; then to a rough network time at ABC (his outspoken ways, his rough/direct approach); next--after a contract lawsuit-to mostly local CBS work in N.Y. And he offers anecdotes about his scores of sports-star interviewees (Ted Williams, Vince Lombardi, and other tough types), as well as ""Boos of the Week"" for un-favorite targets: artificial turf, hockey fights, National Hockey League playoffs, George Steinbrenner, etc. Okay tidbits for fans and a few other sports-mavens--from one braodcaster who doesn't take himself too seriously. (""Come on, it's games, let's have some humor in here."")
