Slade and Slade's daughter, a divorcee, Rose, take him in hand. Gurney has concealed an unhappy marriage, but his wife -- now a prostitute --turns up and brings down on him the censure of the town and he is forced out of the church. He gets a divorce, joins the Service as a chaplain, wins the Military Cross in France, is invalided back to England -- and Southfleet -- where the people reappoint him and he marries Rose. Regenerative romance with solid swing upward. Noble -- but noisome.
