NATHAN COULTER

In the time between the death of his mother and that of his grandfather, Nathan, a backwoods Kentucky boy, grows in manhood. His life is on the whole uneventful in outward happennings. He hunts, fishes, goes into town of a Saturday night, attends a country fair. His scapegrace uncle, his older brother and the beautiful young wife of an ugly elder neighbor help the hero along the path towards maturity. Like his brother before him, Nathan leaves home when he and his father have a bitter fight. A sensitive adolescent theme is handled rather poetically, but so uniform in tone that no drama is generated and no sense of time passing is felt.
