From the allegory of A Matter of Conscience, this new book is ""A Portrait of Chivalry"" and as such it should find a more select circle of readers among those who enjoy belles letters- and a leisurely racontage of the past. The retired Captain of Horse once served under the Tsar, and has now settled down in the Lake region of Italy, and his book is mainly made up of the anecdotes, folk tales and memoirs which enliven the conservation of this retired soldier. Most of the stories have as their theme deeds of bravery and courtliness which distinguished such ""shining fools"" as Bayard and Bertrand de Guesclin. And it serves as a gentle reminder of gentler times which will have a nostalgic bouquet for those to whom gallantry and knight errantry still exert their timeless appeal.
