The building of the transcontinental railroad has been a recurring theme in children's literature. Until the recent advent of the space age it dominated the cinema and television screens. Here at long last is a book aimed at an adult audience. It provides a straightforward account of that single historic event. Mr. Griswold has uncovered for the reader a story that has less violence but more economics, fewer saboteurs and a lot more politics than its popular predecessors. There are still Indians in the cast, but men such as Dodge, Crocker, Huntington and Durant have been given leading roles. The story is not any the worse for that. Recommended for popular consumption.
