by Whit & Hallie- Eds. Burnett ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 19, 1964
Writers, teachers and cicerones of the shorter form as editors of Story magazine and various anthologies, the Burnetts now present a king of amplified demonstration of the genre in this ""book to show the living work in the making."" This consists of a definition of various types of short stories evolving from the traditional to the subjective to the objective to the experimental to the universal, with selections (from Story magazine over the last thirty years) and the writers' and editors' commentaries on the particular story, how they wrote it then and how they evaluate it now. These observations indicate briefly biographical background, influences, intentions, approaches. The authors include Mailer, Farrell, Jesse Stuart and Tennessee Williams, Caldwell and Capote, Kay Boyle, John Knowles and the Burnetts among others. As such, the book is a workshop demonstration-- a kind of retrospective of primary value for prospective writers.
