ACCORDING TO ST. JOHN

Heavy-handed follow-up to last year's smart-alecky St. John's Baptism Here, S.F. p.i. Jeremiah St. John and his partners--sexy Playboy-posing Mickey and huge Seminole aphorist Chief Moses--are defending nude-for-the-plot's-sake actress Denise, who's accused of causing Macbeth costar Amanda Coles' overdose. Their investigation focuses on Amanda's homosexual movie-star husband; her producer lover; her current lover; her rejected lover; her avant director, who owns a gun; his assistant; an opening-night critic who seems to have missed the first act; and a certain key that opens up a very well-to-do door, revealing all--the real murderer/motive/method (which the clever reader will have deduced half a book back, maybe even sooner). Tiresome, with Jeremiah's moves on Mickey a weary running gag, ditto the Chiefs non sequiturs. The slim plot not only lacks a socko finish, it could have stood a breezy rewrite.
