This one's for the Gipper and the legion of fans who follow the fortunes of Notre Dame's football team. Even more than individual players, ND's coaches have inspired devotion at the 50-yard line: Knute Rockne, a notorious manipulator, who probably fabricated the request behind the Gipper speech; Frank Leahy who received last rites at halftime, then went on to win the game; Ara Parseghian who worked in scrimmages between rehearsals for his daughter's wedding. There are memories of great games and losers (the 55-24 Southern Cal blitz), surprisingly little on particular players--this is team history. Many photos plus statistics from 1887 forward. Strictly routine play but a sure charge for alumni.
