THE LILIES OF THE FIELD

A novelette which might well find a permanent place alongside of Paul Callico's small fables, here tells in moving terms a story of a carefree Negro veteran, who comes upon a group of West German nuns, with high aspirations and small abilities, and turns his training to help them build their church. Then he disappears from the region, the goal achieved, the church ready for dedication. A wistful story, tenderly told and with wide appeal. Already in the district this is a legend in the making.
