by William Gargan ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 21, 1968
Unassumingly never any bigger than King of the B's and almost but not quite a Best Supporting Actor, bluff, likable Bill Gargan runs through his life beginning when it almost came to an end cancer of the larynx. In the eight years since, the bellowing Irishman who was reduced to a whispered monosyllable has fought back and has converted most of his energies into working for the American Cancer Society. A New York Irish American, Gargan started out in small parts, always preferred the theatre (but not long runs) to films, eventually married the girl he went out with at 14, was part of the big scene which included the Barrymores, Gable, Lombard, Tracy ct al. This all is told in an easy fashion with no real show biz bezazz-just a workmanlike view of his profession but he comes on very strong for the cause to which he's volunteered his best efforts and for the values of mily and faith. The book may well have some of the appeal of his friend Pat O'Brien's The Wind at My Back (1964).
