This rollicking spoof of the great national pastime by a prolific author of sports books combines an Uncle Ed minus a voice with the zany antics of a Harold Lloyd, the suspense of a serial thriller, and a population straight from Al Capp. Twin prep school grads Alvin and Joe organize a baseball team from local talent during a summer in the West Virginia hills. In addition to the horse, Edgar, used as a sub center fielder in the last innings, the Smoky Bellows Anvils' roster includes: Tarp Mudweller, owner of Edgard and brother of beautiful barefoot Minerva; Boone McCloud; Lank Frisbee; Peahead McGill, who wiggles his ears; Ab Sneed; Tobe Tolivar; and Henri Dubonnt, a French wood chopper whose unfamiliarity with the rules brings hilarious disaster as often as his mighty swing results in a fabulous hit. The tongue-in-cheek reporting of action and dialogue by Alvin makes this a folksy fantasy.
