by William J. Lederer ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 24, 1961
The Ugly American, of which Lederer was co-author, met with unusual popularity among teen agers, so this factual background for the stories and situations depicted in the earlier book should definitely be called to the attention of young adults. American diplomacy and foreign aid in southeast Asia present a terrifying picture of greed, malpractice, evasion and falsification as revealed by Lederer. Perhaps one-sided in selection and presentation of material, this nonetheless provides an important inside picture, which the enthusiastic reception of the concept of the new Peace Corps makes of particular significance today.
