SURPRISE PARTY

Detective Spencer Cross-Wade of the NYPD is awaiting December 5 with fierce frustration: for six years there's been an annual murder of an auburn-haired woman on that date. Meanwhile, auburn-haired Samantha Shaw is planning a big 40th birthday for her new husband Marty; but, as Samantha digs into Marty's past, she finds that he's told her all sorts of lies! Meanwhile, too, we watch as Marry behaves very suspiciously--quite obviously planning another murder for December 5. There are few surprises in this psycho-gothic suspense tale, then--especially once Samantha goes to the police with her worries: they soon figure out that Marty is the avenging psycho (his auburn-haired mother killed his father on Dec. 5, 1952), baiting a trap for him. And, despite two highly implausible final twists, this is formula fare in the My-Husband-the-Psycho line--with very slim content competently stretched out to novel length.
