THE FAR AWAY MAN

Marshall's black-comic Yellowthread Street mysteries, once so strikingly distinctive, have now become all too predictable and formulaic: in each episode Hong Kong's Chief Inspector Harry Feiffer searches for a psycho-killer. . . while his lieutenants engage in some absurd, bizarre, non-lethal investigation. This time the psycho is dubbed ""The Far Away Man"": a Westerner with a faraway look, he is on a quiet rampage, killing a variety of citizens (a shoe-shine man, an English aristocrat, etc.) and leaving an odd batch of health certificates behind as clues. Meanwhile, cops Spencer and Auden (tee-hee) must deal with a maniacal practical joker/noisemaker at a large apartment complex. Bizarre motivations, a nightmarish air of belabored hysteria, but little of the comic brio of previous outings.
