by William O. Steele ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1955
Another wilderness portrait by the author of The Buffalo Knife, Wilderness Journey etc., closely follows the fortunes of three children left alone in the Virginia forests after an Indian raid. Laird Whitlock, 11 and the central character, is with his father and a group of salt hunters as the story opens and there is some worry that Indians may attack with the approach of warm spring weather. When they do, only Laird, another boy Matt, and Jane, younger still are left, with Matt's and Jane's fathers killed and Laird's vanished as a probable captive. Starting for home, the children have an arduous road to go. They disagree on routes; they are captured for even more harrowing experiences with Shawnees- before they escape and finally find Laird's father.Realistic and unglorified; a refreshing change from the general run.
