The Montana Territory, and its promise of gold, brings its traffic of prospector- settlers, among them Steve Hartlett, and the Willows-Beth and Starr and their worthless cousin, Jerry. Steve's first introduction to Bannack, a ""shoot-town"", is the loss of his wife; violence alerts vigilants action- and Steve is its but, in his attempt to protect Starr; Beth's righteousness is turned against her sister and is blind to Jerry's lawless vengeance- but Starr, and Steve, escape to a more peaceful life farther on... Indigenous, but there are innovations too.
