Josephine is the cat but it's Jennifer, the old car, that has nine lives. Abandoned in the junkyard, the only home Josephine has ever known, Jennifer is reactivated by Mr. Frenzy, (so dubbed by Josephine) and almost wrecked repeatedly as he tears through the countryside with Josephine stowed-away in the back. He is foolhardy once too often, however, and Jennifer is immured in a muddy ravine. Mr. Frenzy abandons her to her sad fate but loyal Josephine fetches help in the form of a farm boy and his father, who pull her out and Start her up again, slowly and carefully at Josephine's favorite speed. There's no explanation of Mr. Frenzy's behavior and not enough incident in their jolting journey; it ends up where it started, a sentimental tribute to an old car.
