This book of ten interview profiles falls into a category that has enjoyed considerable success in recent years among ""evangelicals""--stories of the conversion and religions life of celebrities, usually entertainers and sports figures. Proctor, a Hatyard law school graduate and former Daily News reporter, runs true to form for this genre. He is always being surprised by the homeliness of his subjects. ""I immediately knew I'd have to throw out my preconceptions of what the famous singer [Bob Goulet] would he like. His rough hewn informality contrasted sharply with the elegant dress and manner he often displays on stage."" But the book is genuine enough, and the flaws are allowed to show. Some of the ground (e.g. Pat Boone, Charles Colson) has been covered before, but the chapter on Ruth Carter Stapleton has drama, and in that on Mark Hatfield, an evangelical differs from the rest of the bunch and the author on Vietnam and on poverty. And it is interesting to hear Bob Dylan's counsel to a searching Paul Stokey--""First go back to your boyhood middle west and walk about and second, read the Bible."" A lively, no-harm-done, gossip item.
