This is a biography of General James Wilkinson, whose chief claim to fame lies in his connection with the Burr conspiracy. Here is the rest of his story, a long record of intrigue and exploitation of his own selfish ends, ironical in title and handling. The book has a note of authenticity, contemporary sources are largely quoted, it is a careful and scholarly job --though one questions its value. A colorful and contradictory character, with an exciting career, Wilkinson began his military life during the American Revolution and ended it in the Mexican revolutions of the 1820's. On the side, he carried on speculation, intrigue, political duplicity, along the Mississippi, playing Spanish and French and American ends against each other. The story of an out and out rascal, the perfect hypocrite.
