SUGAR ISN'T EVERYTHING

Diagnosed as a diabetic, 11 -year-old Amy learns to give herself twice daily insulin shots, test her blood for sugar, and develop a new diet and exercise regimen. Packed with information, the first part of the story details Amy's symptoms, the second her stay in the hospital, and the third her anger and gradual acceptance as well as her family and friends' reaction to her diabetes. The author has provided Amy with a supportive family who allow her to take responsibility for maintaining her condition, and Ed, a hospital nurse, who conducts an intensive education program for young diabetics. Expenses, long-term effects of the disease, and causes are briefly mentioned. Although there are a few non-clinical details woven into the narrative, the plot and characters are stage-managed to provide information, not story. Amy's experiences will probably interest only children who are diabetic or know someone with this condition. Glossary.
