What is exciting about this book is the combination of Bonestell's brilliant full color paintings of celestial phenomena of which there are 16, and Ley's thorough knowledge presented in his usual engaging, firm and clear style. These men created the imaginatively done and successful The Conquest of Space and The Exploration of Mars. This time they begin with a survey of our solar system and proceed to the details of what if would take to reach the star nearest us, Alpha Centauri, some 25 million miles away. There is technological and sociological speculation here that would intrigue any imaginative person. Ley discusses the nature and development of the stars, wisely utilizing the historical approach. There are special chapters about the unusually numerous binaries, and our own galaxy. All of this is for the person with a better than average interest in astronomy and space travel, though the 32 pages of very superior Illustrations will fascinate anyone and perhaps convince a younger mind that there is more to astronomy than meets the eye.
