The night of her debut at Covent Garden, a resounding success, Philippa Talbot quarrels with her husband Nick, over the appearance of a face in the crowd, Elizabeth Rusman, a woman he had known five years earlier. Elizabeth is found strangled, and happenstantial evidence leads to Nick's arrest and trial. Four hundred miles away, in Scotland, the headmaster of a boys' school whose wife had left him reads all about it in the papers and seems impregnable until Philippa, whose eyes are as sharp as her ears, makes the connection through a song.... Not his best, but still a very personable performance, with automatic transmission to an audience well established in print, on the screen.
