THE MEANING OF REPENTANCE

The author explains the misconceptions of repentance, due in part to a mistranslation of the word. The idea of self-torture, of ""doing-penance"" is discarded for a more creative view. He sees repentance as a metamorphosis of the whole man; as a reorientation of a personality with reference to God and his purpose. Repentance presupposes new revelation; it demands a complete change in mental outlook and life design. The author believes that the church must realize this and on this basis redefine its task for the future, and the final pages are devoted to the meaning that this more creative interpretation can have for preaching. The author is Professor of New Testament at Presbyterian Seminary, Louisville, Ky.
