A welcome addition to collections of folk tales, retold with a nice simplicity that makes them delightful reading aloud. For imaginative or nervous children, the gentler and more humorous quality -- as compared with the German and Scandinavian tales, for instance -- makes these an excellent choice. Most of the familiar characters common to fairy tales the world around are found in this collection,- the kindly old couple who are childless and to whom the immortals grant a supernaturally beautiful daughter; the animals with power to grant wishes, the mischief making sprites, gods and goddesses, and so on. The focus on the interests and background of an island people is naturally on stories of the sea, of fishermen, of the magic underwater world.
