PAPA LA FLEUR

No account of the content of this book can possibly capture the rare charm and appeal of the story. The motive is the inevitable tragedy of the conflict between youth and age. The setting is remote Wisconsin at the moment when modern progress seeks to impose itself on the fragile roots of inherited French tradition. The plot is slight, the characterization symbolic, perhaps, rather than factual. But there is suggestion here of the same intangible power that one feels in Willa Cather's SHADOW ON THE ROCK and LOST LADY. It's a slight book, good for a plus sale. A book of rare distinction.
