A book for the layman, but not, I should say, for the person wholly uninitiated in the technical side of music. The author claims that a proficiency is unnecessary to understanding, but surely the book will appeal more to those to whom harmony and tone color mean something. Melody and rhythm belong to all the world. On these four points, he bases his analysis of listening to music, and into these categories he fits his analysis of musical form, orchestration, musical texture. From composer to interpreter to listener -- so it goes.
