THE BLUE ROAN

Roddy Gammon, 13, gets a games horse -- a small blue roan, fast and hard to handle, named Boots and he's eagerly in the saddle hoping to win all kinds of championships. He wins his first in a barrel race and there are more blue ribbons to come but Boots is independent to the point of indifference and finally bucks him off. At this point he learns, to everyone's surprise, that she is about to foal and has every right to be ""mean."" There's a tacked on ending when Patsy, his sister, disappears, and Roddy and Boots and foal Oberon all go searching for her. An inconsequential story all in unbridled ""oh gee"" ""gee whiz"" prose.
