FORM LINE OF BATTLE!

This is an impressive sequel to To Glory We Steer (1968) which launched young Richard Bolitho in the Hornblower tradition. It takes place some years later with England facing a revolutionary France. Captain Bolitho is assigned command of the tried old Hyperion, a 74-gun ship which will need all of its bombast and blast before the end. Bolitho captures, loses and regains a small strategic island off the coast of France; he negotiates an uprising and, later, a massive evacuation. . .all in the face of sputtering, paranoid Rear Admirals. As in the first book, the men, the ships and the times are drawn with a meticulous devotion to detail and the sea battles are savvy and savage.
