THE INCREDIBLE TIDE

There's surprisingly little subtlety in Mr. Key's latest which deals with Conan of Orme, a super-seventeen-year-old who has survived for the past five years on a tiny island. A remote voice has told him that he has a mission--which comes when he is finally picked up by fanatical followers of the ""New Order,"" an oppressive regime that has taken over after magnetic waves destroyed most of the world. They are also looking for ""Briac Roa,"" known as ""The Teacher,"" who communicates telepathically from his hiding place to a small group of decent types that the ""New Order"" hopes to dominate. Conan is taken to ""Industria"" where he finds ""The Teacher"" working as a misfit ship builder. The Teacher, a superscientist, predicts that Industria is about to be split apart by an earthquake and he tries to sacrifice himself to warn the people. But this fails and he and Conan must escape and get to their group ahead of a gigantic tidal wave. The book is as bombastic as Industria's slogans. . . and about as believable.
