An isolated group of girls is threatened when outsiders learn of their existence.
Wren lives on the Hill on an island off the Mainland. The Hill was created by the Colony, an organization that has existed in secret for 67 years, training girls in survival skills using the Manual. The oldest resident acts as Head Girl, and each must leave when she turns 15. With a fresh Departure Ceremony over, Wren becomes Head Girl. Almost immediately, one of the girls under her watch goes missing. After learning she may have been taken into one of the forbidden forests, Wren decides to go after her, disregarding the Manual’s warning that no girls can survive outside the Hill’s boundary. She brings Quinn, who is the Lead Hunter and her best friend. As they move deeper into the forest, they discover more than they anticipated: They aren’t alone on the island, and the Manual has been misleading them. Worse still, the Hill has been ambushed in their absence—and Wren’s willing to give her life for her home. Lyrical writing and deep worldbuilding make for an immersive reading experience. A later shift toward constant action dampens the intrigue as character development falls off, but readers will be drawn back in by the promise of a sequel unraveling more secrets of the Colony. Wren is assumed to be White, and Quinn is Black.

A thoughtful, realistically messy emotional wallop that destigmatizes mental disorders.
Andy and Shelbi find love while navigating mental health challenges in suburban Georgia.
It all starts when 18-year-old Andy Criddle drunkenly texts the wrong number. The mistaken recipient ends up offering him emotional support and asks him not to drive drunk. Despite agreeing, he gets behind the wheel—and into an accident. After being charged with a DUI, Andy, the son of a congresswoman running for Senate, is barred from attending his graduation and shamed in the press. Meanwhile, 16-year-old AP physics student Shelbi Augustine, who finds car crashes interesting for scientific reasons, picks up Andy’s wallet at the scene of the wreck. She returns it to him in class and gives him a pep talk before nervously rushing away. The judge orders Andy to complete community service at a soup kitchen where Shelbi regularly volunteers, and when their paths cross again, she confesses that she was the person he was texting. As they grow closer, Shelbi, who has bipolar depression, has Andy sign a friendship agreement. Rule No. 6 reads, “Do not, under any circumstances, fall in love with Shelbi.” Naturally, this is a rule destined to be broken. The comfort and ease the two have are mirrored by Stone’s breezy writing. Her casual tone acts as a potent salve for the heart-wrenching scenes and the searing portrayal of healing. Most characters are Black; Andy’s dad is White, and Shelbi’s paternal grandmother is from India.

Cliques writ large take over in the first of a projected dystopian trilogy.
The remnant population of post-apocalyptic Chicago intended to cure civilization’s failures by structuring society into five “factions,” each dedicated to inculcating a specific virtue. When Tris, secretly a forbidden “Divergent,” has to choose her official faction in her 16th year, she rejects her selfless Abnegation upbringing for the Dauntless, admiring their reckless bravery. But the vicious initiation process reveals that her new tribe has fallen from its original ideals, and that same rot seems to be spreading… Aside from the preposterous premise, this gritty, paranoid world is built with careful details and intriguing scope. The plot clips along at an addictive pace, with steady jolts of brutal violence and swoony romance. Despite the constant assurance that Tris is courageous, clever and kind, her own first-person narration displays a blank personality. No matter; all the “good” characters adore her and the “bad” are spiteful and jealous. Fans snared by the ratcheting suspense will be unable to resist speculating on their own factional allegiance; a few may go on to ponder the questions of loyalty and identity beneath the façade of thrilling adventure.
