Thrilling from start to finish.
Lana thought that all she had to worry about were the Dragon Knights—until she learned about the Dragonblood Ring.
Lana is finally back home in Puerto Rico, but unfortunately, Dragon Knights are still out there: They need the magic of the Sol de Noche dragons to bring their master, the Sire, back. Lana and her Blazewrath team must stay hidden on the island until things are safe. However, when Victoria overhears one of their bodyguards talking about dragon trappers popping up in nearby Cuba and the Dominican Republic, she knows she must investigate—which means working with Lana, no matter how much they butt heads. Lana grabs Victoria and dives headfirst into a Transport Charm, compliments of an unsuspecting Director Sandhar. They land in Le Parc Du Chasseurs, a dragon arena in France, in the middle of a secret Dragonblood match. As the girls piece together what is happening, they realize that the Dragon Knights are not the only threat their dragons face. Picking up immediately where Blazewrath Games(2020) ended, this entry is exciting from the outset. Chapters switch perspectives between Victoria and Lana, giving a more well-rounded view of the story and its diverse cast of characters. Readers will appreciate the complexity of the human relationships and evolving characterization as well as the psychic bond between riders and dragons. Dragon battles and action sequences, paired with magic elements that expand upon the previous entry, make this a page-turner.

Guaranteed to fly off the shelves.
Cliques writ large take over in the first of a projected dystopian trilogy.
The remnant population of post-apocalyptic Chicago intended to cure civilization’s failures by structuring society into five “factions,” each dedicated to inculcating a specific virtue. When Tris, secretly a forbidden “Divergent,” has to choose her official faction in her 16th year, she rejects her selfless Abnegation upbringing for the Dauntless, admiring their reckless bravery. But the vicious initiation process reveals that her new tribe has fallen from its original ideals, and that same rot seems to be spreading… Aside from the preposterous premise, this gritty, paranoid world is built with careful details and intriguing scope. The plot clips along at an addictive pace, with steady jolts of brutal violence and swoony romance. Despite the constant assurance that Tris is courageous, clever and kind, her own first-person narration displays a blank personality. No matter; all the “good” characters adore her and the “bad” are spiteful and jealous. Fans snared by the ratcheting suspense will be unable to resist speculating on their own factional allegiance; a few may go on to ponder the questions of loyalty and identity beneath the façade of thrilling adventure.

A worthy follow-up to a stellar debut.
A Black teenage witch deals with the fallout of past choices while trying to prevent future destruction.
Voya is facing the aftermath of the tough choices she made in Blood Like Magic (2021) in order to pass her Calling and acquire magical powers. Having received two gifts, Voya is now the youngest Matriarch ever to be crowned in her family. She finds that she has much to do to earn the respect of those around her—and possibly even those who came before her, since her ancestors have not answered any of her calls for guidance. The recent death of her grandmother—her family’s previous Matriarch—has caused new intrafamilial strain and enhanced existing stressors. Not only that, but Justin Tremblay, renowned tech magnate and sponsor father of Luc, Voya’s first love, is presumed dead, and Luc thinks Voya is responsible. As if her plate weren’t full enough, Voya experiences a vision that shows her the potential annihilation of her family and the wider Black witch community in Toronto. Now, to try and prevent the devastating future she foresaw, she has to work to overcome her insecurities as a Matriarch and convince the elders who also lack faith in her to unite. Thanks to Sambury’s fluid writing style and well-established storyline and characters, readers will easily be able to follow Voya and other supporting characters as their lives and challenges become more complicated.
