Listeners will quickly take up the percussive chorus—“Dump it in, smash it down, drive around the Trashy town! Is the trash truck full yet? NO”—as they follow burly Mr. Gilly, the garbage collector, on his rounds from park to pizza parlor and beyond.
Flinging cans and baskets around with ease, Mr. Gilly dances happily through streetscapes depicted with loud colors and large, blocky shapes; after a climactic visit to the dump, he roars home for a sudsy bath.

The latest addition to the Small World series, which shows children around the world engaged in similar activities, focuses on the very human act of smiling. Using full-color photographs, Swain supplies a rhythmic cascade of statements and queries: “Do you smile when you put on a hat? Do you smile for the camera, just like that?” Every page contains a photograph with one to two lines that are simple enough for beginning readers to attempt. The scope of photographs allows children to stretch their imaginations: all convey the information that people are more alike than different. An index provides further information on the locations and settings of the photographs. (Picture book. 3-7)

PLB 0-06-028114-6 An Edward Lear Alphabet (32 pp.; $14.95, PLB $14.89; Apr. 30; 0-06-028113-8, PLB 0-06-028114-6): By injecting Lear’s alphabet with vivid shots of color and joyful graphics, Radunsky blasts this Victorian verse into the 21st century. For some readers, Lear’s rhymes on their own border on precious: “J was once a jar of jam/Jammy/Mammy/Clammy/Jammy/Sweet Swammy/Jar of Jam.” However, juxtaposed with an acid-blue background, topped with a bright yellow lid, and designated with a green and orange letter J, this jam jar jumps. The colors and graphics add a very effective jolt to this silly, quite old, ABC. (Picture book. 3-6)
