Jam-packed with drama from the very beginning, Hockman’s second novel follows 26-year-old recent law school graduate Cassidy Walker after she has a car accident and wakes up from a six-day coma. She's devastated that her boyfriend, Devin, isn't at the hospital, and she's frantic to find him. But Cass’ mother and her best friend are confused by her urgent ramblings about her three-month-long relationship with Devin. The memories of a grand romance Cass has carried from her coma are fake—she's never had a boyfriend named Devin. Hockman’s story unfurls as Cass struggles with the emotional aftermath of her car accident, adjusting to her new job at the prestigious Smith & Boone law firm, and her desire to find the man of her literal dreams. A year later, she does just that, meeting Devin Bloom and his brother, Perry, face to face at their flower shop when she stops in for a bouquet. This chance encounter sparks the beginning of a relationship that feels like fate. It's far from perfect, though, as Hockman soon shows, and Cass and Devin seem to take turns acting immaturely. Still, Cass is sure to earn readers' affections with her wit, charm, and passionate disposition. The book can be predictable at times, but the pleasingly imperfect characters more than make up for that, and Hockman’s bright, witty language ties everything together.

Two struggling authors spend the summer writing and falling in love in a quaint beach town.
January Andrews has just arrived in the small town of North Bear Shores with some serious baggage. Her father has been dead for a year, but she still hasn’t come to terms with what she found out at his funeral—he had been cheating on her mother for years. January plans to spend the summer cleaning out and selling the house her father and “That Woman” lived in together. But she’s also a down-on-her-luck author facing writer’s block, and she no longer believes in the happily-ever-after she’s made the benchmark of her work. Her steadily dwindling bank account, though, is a daily reminder that she must sell her next book, and fast. Serendipitously, she discovers that her new next-door neighbor is Augustus Everett, the darling of the literary fiction set and her former college rival/crush. Gus also happens to be struggling with his next book (and some serious trauma that unfolds throughout the novel). Though the two get off to a rocky start, they soon make a bet: Gus will try to write a romance novel, and January will attempt “bleak literary fiction.” They spend the summer teaching each other the art of their own genres—January takes Gus on a romantic outing to the local carnival; Gus takes January to the burned-down remains of a former cult—and they both process their own grief, loss, and trauma through this experiment. There are more than enough steamy scenes to sustain the slow-burn romance, and smart commentary on the placement and purpose of “women’s fiction” joins with crucial conversations about mental health to add multiple intriguing layers to the plot.

Mae is introduced as Odessa’s political foil, and although her presence drives much of Odessa’s internal drama—being constantly overshadowed or underestimated—she’s mostly seen through Odessa’s perspective. Her motivations, ambitions, and political maneuverings might have benefited from deeper exploration to give more nuance to the power dynamics. However, Perry’s evocative prose and intricate plotting make for a gripping tale. Readers looking for a slow-burn romantasy with rich political intrigue and a protagonist forced to create her own fate will find much to enjoy.
