by Anita Lobel & illustrated by Anita Lobel ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1993
Another enchanting alphabet from the illustrator of On Market Street (1981, Caldecott Honor). A diminutive Pierrot packs a gigantic basket with produce for his friend Pierrette— ``Asparagus,'' ``Beets,'' ``Flowers,'' exotics like ``Indian figs'' and ``a Pineapple,'' and finally a ``Ukelele'' and a ``Xylophone'' so that they can share music at their picnic, plus a ``Zebra'' to carry it all to Pierrette. Lobel's bright-colored illustrations are merry and decorative, with Pierrot's traditional costume ballooning around him as he gathers lettuces and mushrooms as large as he is. Charming. (Picture book. 3-7)

adapted by Beatrice Tanaka & illustrated by Michel Gay ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 1, 1991
Via a French adaptation, an amusing cumulative tale from the Pacific Northwest. Seeing Rabbit scoot by, four larger animals conclude that they should run, too—only to discover that Rabbit's reason for speed (he's late for dinner) has nothing to do with them. Gay deftly captures every nuance of the foolish pursuit in broad brush-strokes that recall oriental painting. Simple, comical, satisfying. (Picture book. 3-7)

by Jonathan Shipton & illustrated by Michael Foreman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 1, 1991
A wide-eyed preschooler explains that Mom is in a bad mood; she has so much to do that she can't read with him, or play— she's ``chained to the kitchen sink.'' Left on his own, the child decides to tidy up his own belongings, depicted in creative disarray in Foreman's colorful watercolors. Then, tiptoeing downstairs, he finds Mom weeping into the dishwater, wipes away her tears, and leads her out into the sunshine—''Just in time'' to share its beauty. Foreman's illustrations are more slapdash than usual for this fine artist but sympathetic. A touching vignette. (Picture book. 3-7)
