A thorny mystery provides a shocking, historically based denouement.
Married sleuths go all out to save a family member.
Keira and Sebastian Gage have a well-founded reputation as private inquiry agents. So when Sebastian’s father, Lord Gage, is attacked in Yorkshire in 1832, they rush to his side along with their baby daughter, Emma; a small entourage of trusted servants; and Sebastian’s half brother, Lord Henry Kerr, whom Lord Gage has never acknowledged. Indeed, Lord Gage is a difficult, secretive man whose relationship with Sebastian is not an easy one for myriad reasons, including the elder Gage’s numerous affairs; his scorn for Keira, who’s overcoming a scandalous past; and their political differences. Lord Gage is housed in the home of Dr. Josiah Barker, who treated him after he was shot in the thigh by a local band of highwaymen. Sebastian and his father have a nasty row, but Lord Gage is surprisingly taken with Emma and shows a softer side. Although the local authorities have been informed because Lord Gage’s footman was killed in the incident, Sebastian and Keira decide that they must investigate if justice is to be done. The highwaymen are protected by the local populace, who benefit from their Robin Hood–style largesse, but since they’ve never injured anyone before, the sleuths suspect that the incident may have been a vendetta against his lordship, whose checkered past with women and secret work for the government have made him many enemies. Together with their servants and Lord Henry, they travel the area asking inconvenient questions that both put them in danger and ultimately reveal the truth.

As sweet as its many sugar-infused puns.
When a baking competition is almost derailed by a contestant’s murder, a chocolatier uses the case to cozy up to a local police officer.
Becca Ransom has no regrets about giving up her Los Angeles life to return to her gorgeous childhood home of Larch Haven, Vermont, where winter makes everything in the small town look even more beautiful. Not only does Becca get to be near her beloved grandparents Lolly and Pop; she’s also happily taken over their family chocolate shop, True Confections. When her closest friend, Dizzy Bautista, tries to talk Becca into entering the upcoming third annual Baking Spirits Bright competition, Becca at first demurs, modestly thinking of herself as more of a chocolatier than a baker. But Dizzy’s anticipation is infectious, and the prospect of appearing in New England’s renowned Bake It Right magazine would be icing on the proverbial competition cake. Soon enough, Becca finds herself not only in the competition but in the finals, with plans for a heavily detailed, fully edible model of Larch Haven as her showcase. Full of jitters, Becca shows up at the finals ready to do her best only to discover the body of fellow competitor Irma, killed by a blow from Becca’s own chocolate chipper. Though Becca is shocked that a murder could take place in such a small community, she’s also cheered at the idea that her favorite police officer Sawyer Maguire’s involvement in the crime might mean a little extra time together as they pool their individual talents to solve the case.

The title says it all.
A bizarre message launches a murky threat to women in the Irish village of Dingle.
It starts with an email. Someone who signs herself One Who Has Not Forgotten sends it to an unspecified number of pregnant young women telling them that the time has come for certain secrets to come to light. Recipients DeafGirlsRule@gmail.com and FiFoFum@gmail.com take the conversation to a chat, messaging each other about the strange warning and finally agreeing to a meetup at the Dingle Spring Festival. In the meantime, John Malone, whose neighbors describe him as “the nosy old goat next door,” is old school enough to become fixated by the aforementioned neighbors’ overflowing mailbox, left unattended while they’re vacationing. When he takes the liberty of retrieving their mail, he finds a ransom note targeting their daughter, Fiona. While Malone is rushing to the Garda station to report the threat to Fiona, pregnant and deaf Shauna Mills arrives at the home of the couple she’s chosen to adopt her out-of-wedlock child to find them bound and gagged by a masked man who holds up signs telling her, “YOU CAN COME QUIETLY / AND LIVE / OR YOU CAN STRUGGLE / AND DIE.” Local veterinarian Dimpna Wilde, who ran into Shauna shortly before she disappeared, calls Detective Inspector Cormac O’Brien, but things quickly spiral out of control. More kidnappings, a body in the local bog, and flashbacks to 30 years earlier, when a shadowy cult leader called the Shepherd impregnated female followers and kept them captive in a compound called the Womb, all contribute to a chaotic narrative in which childbirth appears simultaneously as a crowning achievement and a deadly danger to women. Neither Cormac’s determination to execute his job faithfully nor Dimpna’s love for all creatures great and small can overcome the ick factor of the underlying puzzle.
