A remarkable picture of fear and pursuit, of inquisition and crucifixion in Nazi Germany, and of the little lives behind the lines. This story of George Heisler, one of seven to escape from a German concentration camp, is an impressive, harrowing and powerful tale of flight, which is, externally, a manhunt, but cuts below the surface in its passions, its implications. One by one, six of the seven who have escaped are caught, and the whole hope of defiance is sustained by Heisler alone. His trail is followed from a school, to a church, to a doctor's office; from Leni, whom he had loved but who had married another man and who repudiates him, to Elly, whom he did not love but had married, to a whore, and finally to old friends, Paul and Liesel, who eventually get him through to the underground. It is an intense and exciting story, per as; it is also a grim and compelling protest against a system. Perhaps not so widely popular as Escape, but geared for a similar market -- a book it is well to watch -- and to push.
