Innocent young Corporal David Butler, vaguely educated and heartsick to be an officer, is yanked from his lancashire Rifles squad a few weeks after the Normandy invasion and placed on special duty with a secret ""Chandos force."" The mission turns out to be--well, the recovery of something colossally valuable from a chateau in Vichy France. The Chandos force, however, turns out to be a mystifyingly deadly group to get involved with--Butler's teammates are trying to kill him! He falls in with equally young Lt. Audley, a stammerer from Cambridge, who just happens to have had relatives who once were the masters of the target chateau, and since Audley too is being crazily ambushed by his Chandos mates, he and Butler make a separate effort to reach the chateau before the Chandos force does. The mysterious treasure? Something absolutely nobody wants. Jumping with irony all the way, and very funny--in Price's quirky military/historical mode.
