DELAY IN THE SUN

Here's a book on which I'd be inclined to bet -- for it seems to come at a psychological moment and to have something of magic in the very situation it suggests. A group of ill-assorted English travelers are caught by chance in a sun-baked village of Northern Spain. This pause, unplanned and unwanted, changes the focus of every life, and the story suggests new paths they will follow. There is humor and romance and tragedy skilfully blended, and the method is a variation on the Grand Hotel pattern. ""Good theatre"" -- and good reading.
