How do you become a songwriting star in an industry riddled with potential pitfalls?
Carlisa “Carli” Henton has a high-pressure job at a media agency representing musicians; she’s the owner’s right-hand woman. But her excellence at work and the time she spends on it is at odds with her real aspiration—to write music for major artists and labels. Diligence and talent have led her to the cusp of success there as well, but in the music industry, personal relationships can cause huge complications. Three years ago, she rejected a producer’s advances, and, in retaliation, he cut her out of working on an album that could have made her career. In her present and possible future is R&B star Tau Anderson, one of her agency's clients, coming on strong with the romance, the connections, and a reputation for trouble. Carli is deeply ambivalent about the best way forward. Strangely, her ambivalence never comes to a clear emotional resolution. A lot of recognizable tropes get teased—nice guy vs. playboy; demanding job vs. artistic ambitions—but these don’t quite play out in satisfying ways. What Coleman delivers instead is a great look inside the music industry, especially the creative aspect. Many industry-immersive novels are high gloss but low depth. This one gives as much rich, loving detail to its nonfamous characters as it does to the flashier ones. Everyone here has complications, and they have great conversations with each other, which may just be enough for some readers.

The pacing is relentless, carrying Odessa from one life-altering event to another as she grapples with duty, defiance, and a destiny she never chose. Her internal conflict is compelling, torn between the expectations placed upon her and the fierce independence that threatens to make her an outcast in her own kingdom. Romance simmers as Odessa struggles to reconcile her obligations with her growing attraction to the Guardian, whose past is as shadowed as his reputation. Mae is introduced as Odessa’s political foil, and although her presence drives much of Odessa’s internal drama—being constantly overshadowed or underestimated—she’s mostly seen through Odessa’s perspective. Her motivations, ambitions, and political maneuverings might have benefited from deeper exploration to give more nuance to the power dynamics. However, Perry’s evocative prose and intricate plotting make for a gripping tale. Readers looking for a slow-burn romantasy with rich political intrigue and a protagonist forced to create her own fate will find much to enjoy.

A collegiate diver and swimmer secretly pursue kink together, and risk falling in love along the way.
Scarlett Vandermeer is struggling. Despite a successful recovery from the injury that almost ended her Stanford diving career, she hasn’t been able to get her head together, and it’s affecting her performance. Plus, she’s trying to stay focused on getting into medical school. A relationship would be out of the question. By comparison, Lukas Blomqvist is a swimming idol, a record-breaker who wins medals as easily as breathing, and Scarlett has long been convinced he would never look in her direction—until one fateful night when a mutual friend lets slip that they have something unexpected in common: Scarlett likes to be submissive in the bedroom, while Lukas prefers to take a dominant approach. Now, they both know a big secret about each other, and it’s something neither of them can stop thinking about. It’s Lukas who suggests they have a fling—purely physical, just to take the edge off, so Scarlett can get out of her own head and stop overthinking her dives. Initially, their arrangement is easy to stick to, but the more time they spend together, the more Scarlett starts to realize that what she feels for Lukas is more than physical attraction. Complicating the situation is the fact that Scarlett’s friend Penelope Ross used to go out with Lukas, and the longer Scarlett keeps mum about her true feelings for him, the more difficult it is to keep the situation hidden from another person she really cares about. While Scarlett and Lukas’ relationship does begin as a physical one, their deeper psychological connection takes a little too long to emerge amid all the other storylines, resulting in a somewhat rushed resolution. However, Hazelwood’s latest is proof of the depth and maturity that has emerged in her writing over the years, and it highlights her embrace of sexier, more emotional elements than were present in her original STEMinist rom-coms.
