He to Wisconsin, and there is caught by the appeal of the new country, the , and their lives -- and finds the edge of vengeance is dulled. He saves Gebhardt's life, and enters into the community activities, experiencing deeply the new world. Eventually, he learns Gebhardt's side of the story and keeps his identity to himself, realizing that his erstwhile enemy has become his best friend. The shift from violence into compassion as basis for a comfortable book.
