A collection of American ghost stories have a modern note as all of them, despite the dates of their origins, are connected to some accessible or recent event. There are about twenty short stories, some only two or three pages long. As one reads a certain light and brittle quality heightens spookiness and there is a swift flow of event in each brief narrative:- of a present day sighting of the screaming ghost of Angeline Tubbs in Saratoga Springs; of Lavender, an elusive beauty of the Ramapo Hills who goes on a date with two college boys; of the drowned party goers on Last Island near New Orleans, whose figures are still to be seen riding a merry-go-round.
