Another problem novel by the author of The Unwilling Heart (which frankly examined the course of action a girl took when her father was indicted for embezzlement) takes a similar theme on a different scale. Julie is a Negro girl from a well bred family and about to enter high school in the vicinity of New York. Her father is a doctor and though her cousin George has violated family precepts to become the next thing to a delinquent, Julie feels that toughness is not her ""way out"". Yet she must find one for with high school comes the realization that other people consider her a Negro first and foremost, not an individual. Quite simply Julie decides to follow her father's advice and behave so that others will see her worth. But carrying this out in the next four years brings new hurts and problems before Julie gains the maturity to accompany her convictions and the faith that helps her make the most of her musical abilities. Warm, understanding and bittersweet, as it should be.
