Runaway muffins attack the town! Can Chico Bon Bon, the titular monkey with the tool belt, get them back and help Clark with his pancake party?
Chico's pal Clark is something of a disaster in the kitchen. His giant pancake is so heavy that it causes the kitchen table to collapse. Broken dishes and syrup are everywhere, but the elephant cook is unfazed. “They’re very dense,” he says calmly. Clark is prepping for a party to celebrate Uncle Bill’s graduation from hotel management school, and Chico is eager to help, his tool belt full of cool kitchen gadgetry and cleaning gizmos. Clark is also working on a gooey lemon pudding and his “supersecret blueberry muffins.” But his recipe is rather…explosive. It blows the door of the oven, and the muffins wreak havoc in the kitchen before bursting through the front door and terrorizing the town. Chico chases after them before coming up with an ingenious plan. It involves the pancakes, the lemon pudding, and, of course, the tools in his belt. Chico saves the town, then enjoys the party. Monroe’s impish illustrations are busy with delightful touches—Chico’s kitchen-specific tool belt, complete with “thermometer with bling” and “butter splapper” is particularly terrific—and her deadpan humor should please adults as well as kids.

A spellbinding tale that will never brown or fade with time.
Soup is always the correct solution.
Evergreen, a young squirrel who lives high in a tree in Buckthorn Forest, is afraid of most things, but top of the list is thunderstorms. When her mother, who makes magical soup, asks her to take an acorn full of soup to Granny Oak, who is ill with the flu, Evergreen is afraid that she won’t be brave enough to do it. But she knows she must—and that she must be careful not to spill a drop, as “Granny Oak will need every bit of it to get better.” Setting off, the scared squirrel encounters a menagerie of adventures and forest creatures in her journey. It’s a wild, imaginative read and one that twists and turns like a forest path, with unexpected surprises along the way. Cordell is a masterful storyteller, and readers will love following Evergreen’s journey as she grows into a more confident squirrel. The artwork is the real star of the show, however; there’s a hint of Sendak in the characters’ humorous expressions and in the timeless pen-and-watercolor backgrounds that cry out to be examined in detail. Educators and caregivers will love reading this story aloud in installments, and readers will adore seeing what Evergreen encounters in her travels. A hint of future stories will tantalize readers, who will close the book eager for a new volume to devour.

Silly and slimy—superfun! (Picture book. 5-8)
Toads and insects give a shout, and Superworm will help you out!
“Superworm is super-long. / Superworm is super-strong. / Watch him wiggle! See him squirm! / Hip, hip, hooray for SUPERWORM!” When a baby toad jumps into the road, Superworm becomes a lasso and saves his bacon. When the bees become bored, Superworm makes a perfect jump-rope. When a beetle falls down a well, Superworm can fish her out. But what happens when the evil Wizard Lizard and his servant crow wormnap Superworm and cast a spell to make him do Wizard Lizard’s bidding? “Action! Quickly! At the double! / Superworm’s in frightful trouble! / We must help him if we can. / We must hatch a cunning plan!” All the garden creatures band together to capture Wizard Lizard and send him to the garbage dump, ensuring that Superworm will be back indeed to help his buggy friends in need. The British duo behind the Gruffalo books and Stick Man (2009) reteam to tell a tale of friendship and cooperation. The unlikely superhero with his googly eyes and winning smile will be hit, and the rhythmic rhyme will have audiences chanting along by the end of the story. At this point in their collaboration, Donaldson and Scheffler know exactly how to complement each other’s work.
