An Indian raid and massacre hits the Burton family where it hurts for Sam's second wife is a Kiowa whose son, Pacer, and his half-brother, Clint, give her full loyalty and love. There are local reprisals when Clint refuses to join the white against the Kiowas; the herd is stampeded; the mother is killed by a white survivor of a raid; Pacer lines up with the Indians. Clint, riding to avenge Sam's killing by the Kiowas, is saved by Pacer and Pacer's death gives him an answer for his future.
