by Claire Huchet Bishop ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 20, 1955
Turning to a story for older readers about bicycle racing and the Tour de France, this vigorous narrative about a boy who wins it has the grit, honesty and faith of Claire Bishop's other books. Andre Girard is 12 when the story opens. He is physically rather weak, sensitive, bullied by Fernand, but not without friends who believe Andre will become the cyclist he wants to be. Feeling mounts through the next years as Andre trains, works as a mechanic to help his family, and becomes absorbed in his studies as well. All the excitement of the Tour de France, an event equal to our world series, mounts to a rousing climax as Girard comes down the home stretch ahead.
