HEROD AND MARIANNE: Based on the German Play by Frederich H. Hebbel

This is readable, rather than playable, I should think as the action is chiefly offstage, in the old tradition, and the content dependent on somewhat careful following of the historical implications. The story of the play revolves around the period immediately preceding the birth of Christ and contemporaneous with the battle of Actium. Herod is surrounded by plotters, including the immediate family, and does not even trust the wife he worships. And on that hangs the story.
