THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS

Strange as it seems to the land lubber, there is a bottomless market for books on knots. And Clifford Ashley is probably the world authority on the subject, so this should be -- for experts --the definitive book. He gives an interesting explanation of the revival of interest in knots, on land and sea -- which is that the radio supplies entertainment while leaving hands free for other occupation. No other handicraft has approached it in popularity. He traces its history from primitive times, through the period when it became a folk art in the early 19th century, up to the revival of interest today. He touches on his own years of sea faring; on how knots became his hobby, collecting types for 40 years, in this encyclopedia of knots, he breaks down the types into such basic classifications as occupational knots, knob knots, bends hitches, lashings, coverings, fancy knots, splicing, sinnets, marlingspike seamanship, etc. He defines terminology, discusses equipment, preparation and application. And he covers -- with how-to-do drawings -- some 3900 knots. Ashley is well known as a marine artist, and has made his own pictures.
